SERVPRO of West Sioux Falls recently hosted a continuing education course for insurance professionals. The course was designed to teach and explain the special procedures used by SERVPRO professionals in mitigating and restoring fire damage claims for the insured. The course provided the insurance professionals with a better understanding of the work performed by the mitigation vendor at fire damage work sites. Participants had hands on training using products that SERVPRO technicians will use to clean surfaces after a fire. Emergency tips were given which can drastically reduce the cost of the claim if performed in a timely manner. Some of the tips are: Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring, place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery, coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil and place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet. Examples of work performed to mitigate fire damage were shared. The course helped give agents and adjusters a better understanding of what their insured goes through when they have fire damage.
