Of all the fires reported in the United States every year, 31 percent happen in residential homes. Negligence, open flames, cooking and more are factors in these fires. Half of all house fires start in the kitchen. Not surprising since it’s where you do the most cooking and house many appliances. The dinner hour, between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. is when most fires happen. The picture is showing a devastating kitchen fire that was likely caused by a small appliance. All levels of the home have a thick covering of black soot and will require demolition and rebuild. Appliances account for about 4 percent of house fires. Here’s some appliance safety tips to follow to decrease your chances of something malfunctioning and catching on fire. Make sure it’s UL approved, never plug them into an extension cord or two-slot outlet and unplug anything, within reason, when you’re on vacation.
