Mold spores are constantly around us both indoors and outdoors. They are carried by the wind as well as on our clothing. However, just because mold spores are constantly present, that does not mean that you have a mold growth that can become a problem. There are a few tell-tale signs to look for when you think you may have a mold growth in your home or business.
- The first and most obvious is a visible mold growth. Mold can come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Common signs include a fuzzy appearance and the colors of white, green, or black.
- Another big sign of an active mold growth is a musty smell in the affected room. A smell of dampness that doesn’t seem to dissipate.
- Damp areas or past water damage that was not properly dried.
- An uptick on health effects that are irregular.
Mold needs three items to grow in your home of business:
- Water: Mold needs a source of moisture to grow. This is can be a constant source of water such as a leaky pipe, or it can be a damp spot on your drywall that received water damage that was not properly dried.
- Oxygen: This is the food source that we really can’t work on preventing. If there is a room in your home or business that is not oxygenated, you may have some bigger problems.
- Food source: A food source for a mold colony includes basically any organic material such as wood or drywall.
