We use a lot of water in our days. Water does a lot of good when it is in the right place, but when it ends up in the wrong places, it can create a complete disaster. Slow leaks that hide out can be particularly detrimental and can even lead to other damages from mold growth.
You can take action, though, simply by getting to know some of the top places that leaks tend to hide in your home. When you are proactive in prevention, you can protect your home and stop issues before they become huge.
Get familiar with a few of these areas and let water only be used for good in your home:
The roof of your house. Taking care of the roof is important for a number of reasons, but when it comes to finding slow leaks, it is one of the more challenging places to locate them.
Our extended winters and heavy snowfalls in Sioux Falls make getting on the roof difficult. It’s crucial to inspect your roof at least once a year, though, and to walk your property and keep a close eye on the roofline throughout the rest of the year. You can also inspect your attic often.
A small, dark space like the attic is a prime location for mold growth when moisture is present. Replace insulation as needed, and watch for puddles or dripping places.
All the bathrooms. In a room where so much water is used every day, finding water problems can actually be a real challenge. It can be easy to overlook drops of water on the floor or ignore a dripping sound.
Look under the sink often for puddles of water, and check behind the toilet for the same. You should also feel around the base of both the toilet and the tub for excess moisture. Seal up any loose pipes and fix caulk that has worn down.
Watch for slow-moving drains, and pay attention to how moist the bathroom is staying. These are both indicators of bigger problems.
Large appliances with water features. There are a lot of appliances around your home that use water almost on a daily basis, and any appliance that uses water has the potential to leak. Just like in the bathroom, get used to checking under sinks and around appliances in your kitchen and laundry room.
Pull your refrigerator, dishwasher and washing machine out and away from the wall at least once a year. Inspect the hoses attached for signs of wear and tear, and clean underneath and behind them. If you find water drops or mold growth, there is a good chance a bigger issue is at play.
Be cognizant of problems when these items are in use as well. If something is slow to fill up or you hear a dripping sound there may be a leak from one of the water lines. Plan to replace your large appliances after their 10th birthday to stop problems before they ever start.
